In 2010 two monitoring sites in the Austrian & Italian Alps were outfitted with Smart Field Lysimeter Systems (UMS, Munich, Germany). Twenty one "third generation lysimeters" where exposed to harsh conditions between 1000 … 2000 meters of elevation. The presentation will show design requirements and installation techniques for these tough settings. The measured data are combined with fixed and variable background information. The data is sent to a database to compare with proofed & reliable long time measurements produced with standardized routines. Modeled data, such as in situ retention curves and evapotranspiration rates, are also available. The maintenance and site management at field stations exposed to these harsh conditions requires modern data acquisition and communication tools to ensure high quality, comparable and reliable long term data.
