We soil scientists have been trying to quantify uncertainty in soil class maps since the 1960s and soil property maps since the 1980s. Nevertheless, the information on uncertainty has not been explicitly incorporated into mapping. Such uncertainty information can be created, and used, informally and formally. Several simple mechanisms for the informal inclusion of uncertainty information into soil attribute maps, and their perception by users,  will be discussed. The formal estimation and use of soil attribute uncertainty information in modelling and assessment will also be discussed. In the end, we are fairly sure, that uncertainty information however rendered enhances the utility of soil maps.
