With the variety of demands on Earth soils only increasing in coming decades, there are scientific imperatives to support long-term soil experiments (LTSEs) to test management effects on the biology, chemistry, and physics of whole soil profiles and soilscapes. The six-decade old long-term soil experiment at the USDA Forest Service's Calhoun Experimental Forest in South Carolina will be used to demonstrate how the passage of time gives LTSEs special value in addressing issues of scientific and societal importance.
