Genetic engineering offers effective ways to create novel variations to improve grasses and legumes. Tremendous progress has been made in genetic modification of forage and turf in the past decade. The rapid advancement of cellular and molecular biology in forage and turf provides novel methods to accelerate or complement conventional breeding efforts. Latest developments in genetic engineering of forage and turf in the public sector will be reviewed and discussed.
