In addition to controlling diseases, applications of some fungicides have been shown to produce plant health effects on field corn. Penthiopyrad (DuPont Vertisan) fungicide applications have been shown to increase root and shoot mass in cereal crops in Europe. In this study, glyphosate-tolerant field corn was applied with different rates of Vertisan alone and in combination with glyphosate (Abundit® Extra herbicide) when the corn was in the V2 to V3 growth stage. Observations were made of plant vigor both visually and utilizing a Greenseeker Handheld Crop Sensor at 14 and 28 days after treatment. Fresh shoot biomass weight, dry root weight and crop injury were also quantified at 14 and 28 days after treatment. Vertisan applications on field corn did not cause crop injury but no significant increases in vigor, fresh shoot biomass or dry root weight were found. Field corn is tolerant to applications of Vertisan but no plant health effects were observed with Vertisan use on this crop.
