Abstract:
The 4-H Experience Agronomy Event was created through the Iowa State Agronomy Club’s community outreach committee. Early in the school year, the group realized the benefits that a large outreach program could have. We would be able to provide valuable leadership, planning, and volunteer experience for our members, help spread the word of our department, and continue to reach out to the youth in our community and teach them about our broad discipline.

The day was oriented towards Iowa 4-H youth, grades 4-8. We wanted to include this group, as high school students tend to have other opportunities to visit campus and learn about the Agronomy Department. For a cost of $5, each student received lunch, a T-shirt, and attended four different sessions. These sessions covered soils, crops, weeds, and climate and were run by professors, teaching assistants, and club members.

Through this first-year event, the club was able to reach out to the community and receive valuable feedback for growing this program for years to come.
