Abstract:
The Crop, Soil, and Environmental Science Club at the University of Tennessee is dedicated to the promotion of environmental science, soil health, and natural resource conservation. Since the creation of the University of Tennessee Soil Outreach Program (SOP) last year, our club has expanded its efforts by partnering with East Tennessee classrooms in order to design environmentally focused curricula for elementary, middle, and high school students. Our new lesson plans provide an interactive presentation that engages students in the fundamentals of environmental and soil science for appropriate grade levels. All lesson plans are structured to adhere to the Tennessee Department of Education’s Science Common Core Standards. After development, the SOP presented the lessons in several local schools, reaching classrooms of children who would otherwise receive little soil science education. Upon successful demonstration, our club provided teachers with the educational materials to allow for continued utilization within the selected school systems.
In our continued mission, the Crop, Soil, and Environmental Science Club reaches young minds by providing activities and educational demonstrations, such as at farmer’s markets, museums, and school trips to the University of Tennessee Soils Lab. Through involvement in the local community and school systems our club has raised awareness of soil and its significant role as one of our most valuable natural resources.
