There are many concepts that describe how humanity values and cares for soil. From the past - Soil conservation, Land evaluation & capability and Soil care. From the present - Soil function, Soil quality, Soil health, Soil condition, Soil change, Soil resilience, Soil ecosystem services, Soil protection. Some are very similar.

The concept should embrace economic, social and policy settings, as well as the biophysical. We need a wider-ranging concept that addresses these settings as well as recognizing the place of earlier concepts. Soil security attempts to fulfil these requirements.
