Urbanization results in disturbed and distressed soils. Biochar can play a role in mitigating these impacts. Biochar addition causes persistent changes in soil chemistry, physics, and biology. Sources of those effects relate both to the material and to the soil. Infiltration and internal water handling characteristics are particularly important performance points for urbanized soils. The ability of one-off applications of compost alone to achieve persistent improvement in soil water handling is limited. This suggests a market entry strategy for biochar.
