Abstract:
Genomewide selection (or genomic selection) is no longer new: it was introduced in 2001, studied in plants for more than a decade, and later found equivalent to a method used in maize in 1994. The increasingly routine use of genomewide selection in maize has prompted us to think about breeding applications that build upon what we have learned about the procedure. This talk will focus on three prospective, follow-up applications of genomewide marker effects in plants: germplasm architecture, targeted recombination, and marker-assisted introgression for quantitative traits. We will present examples of these applications in maize and in other plant species.
