Abstract:
Eugene John Kamprath earned a B.S. (1950) and M.S. (1952) in Agronomy from the Univ. of Nebraska, and a Ph.D. in Agronomy from North Carolina State Univ. (1955). He joined the faculty at North Carolina State Univ. that same year and was promoted to Professor in 1963. Dr. Kamprath taught the undergraduate and graduate soil fertility courses and co-taught Crop and Soil Management. He was appointed Head of the Soil Science Department in 1990 and served until his retirement in 1996. In retirement, he continued to serve on a volunteer basis as a substitute instructor for lectures and laboratories. Dr. Kamprath conducted landmark research in soil acidity and liming, phosphorus availability, and nitrogen use efficiency. He served as major professor for 26 Ph.D. and 17 M.S. degree recipients conducting research in North Carolina, Brazil, and Indonesia. In honor of his impactful research program, Dr. Kamprath was named William Neal Reynolds Professor of Soil Science in 1981. He received the first Applied Soil Research Award of the Soil Science Society of America in 1986 and was given the Soil Science Award for Distinguished Service in 1997 by the Soil Science Society of America. The Univ. of Nebraska awarded him an honorary Doctor of Science degree in 1987 and named him the Alumnus of the Year in 2000. Dr. Kamprath served as Editor-in-Chief of the Soil Science Society of America Journal from 1969-1975. He was named a Fellow of the American Society of Agronomy in 1972 and the Soil Science Society of America in 1976. Despite his distinguished career and numerous achievements, Dr. Kamprath will be best remembered by many of his students and colleagues for his humble, genuine, friendly, and caring personality and the inspiration he was to them.
