Soil Taxonomy is a classification system that is continuously evolving in complexity. Has it reached the point where it has become too confusing and inoperable? Have soil taxonomist’s alienated themselves from the rest of the scientific community? What about users of soil survey? This presentation will attempt to outline why Soil Taxonomy is not widely used by  scientists within and outside the soil science discipline.  New directions will be presented to challenge the way soil variability is described and communicated.
