Abstract:
Dr. Hazelton is co-author of Understanding Soils in Urban Environments, a comprehensive handbook for engineers working with soils in a variety of urban contexts, including manufactured soils for green roofs, urban greenspaces, and other environments where plants are intended to thrive. During the planning stage of land development a particular land use that is proposed for a site is often determined by other factors completely independent of soil type. A highly specialized knowledge of soil conditions is essential to “design” or engineer soil profiles to fulfill a particular function which may vary from a restored green space to a racecourse, a specialized sport facility, to revegetation of roadside batters.
