How to Retire without Leaving the Job You Love.

University faculty have normally been aware of the possibility of maintaining an Emeritus appointment following standard retirement. However, I find that many Federal employees are not aware that very similar Emeritus programs have recently been established in many Federal agencies, including Agriculture, Defense, Interior, NASA and others. The authority to recognize such volunteer arrangements was granted generally through legislation abthorizing new personnel management plans. In my case, FRN Vol. 63, No. 57, March 25, 1998, p. 14592. Inquiries across several agencies have found that more than a thousand scientists are now participating in such programs.
