Managing Global Resources for a Secure Future

2017 Annual Meeting | Oct. 22-25 | Tampa, FL

121 Special Session Symposium--Emeritus and Late-Career Members: Exploring both Retirement Opportunities within our Sciences and Emeritus Membership Opportunities

Oral Session
Special Sessions
As many members of the Societies are either in active retirement or are looking at retirement in the near future, there has been increasing interest from members in both continuing with an active role in our sciences and how the Societies can play a role. This session will feature five talks, by members, on activities they are involved in now that they are “retired” (and likely busier than ever).    In addition, realizing the average age of members in most scientific societies is increasing, we know that our societies must actively reach out to and involve those who have moved into retirement to ensure we meet the needs of all members.  At the Annual Meeting in 2015, ESA and the Societies presented a symposium for senior/late-career and emeritus members titled “Synergy and Partnering with Retired and Emeriti Seniors in Professional Societies on their Involvement in Research, Teaching, Special Interests, Travel, and Consulting in Retirement.”  Since then, a similar session was held at the 2016 meeting and a task force has been established with a small group of members to discuss the contributions, needs, and accomplishments of “retired” members and how the Societies can play a role.  In addition to the presentations, the results of a survey completed this summer to current and former emeritus members and those in the late-career stages will be presented and a discussion will follow on 1) how the Societies can retain senior members of the societies, 2) how to encourage more involvement by members and support by the Societies, and 3) how to encourage emeritus members to continue to attend the annual meetings.
